These animals – including nematodes, springtails, mites, earthworms, spiders and other arthropods – drive decomposition, regulate microbial communities and contribute to nutrient cycling. However, little is known about how these animals’ “trophic diversity” – meaning the variety of feeding activities – is affected by land use and climate. An international research team led by the University of Göttingen has now shown that soil animal communities have greater trophic diversity in agricultural ecosystems and in tropical regions. The study analysed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios from over 17,000 soil samples, covering 28 major groups of organisms from 456 sites across 19 countries. The results were published in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

The researchers found that animals that feed on microorganisms – such as nematodes, springtails and mites – had higher trophic diversity than those that feed on dead organic matter or live as predators. This suggests that microbial feeders exploit a particularly broad range of resources

[Content truncated...]
"Tundra - Climate Change, Human Impact, Arctic","https://www.britannica.com/science/tundra/Effects-of-human-activities-and-climate-change","britannica.com","Tundra - Climate Change, Human Impact, Arctic: Earth's tundra regions are harsh and remote, so fewer humans have settled there than in other environments.",null
"Global Organic Fertilizers Market Gains Momentum as Sustainable Farming and Organic Food Demand Rise Worldwide","https://vocal.media/trader/global-organic-fertilizers-market-gains-momentum-as-sustainable-farming-and-organic-food-demand-rise-worldwide","vocal.media","The global agricultural sector is rapidly shifting toward environmentally sustainable practices, and organic fertilizers are becoming one of the most...",{"mentionsLast7Days":39,"mentionsLast30Days":39
3,[23,29,35],[42,47,50,54,57,61
"UPSC Prelims 2026 top environment topics checklist","upsc-prelims-2026-top-environment-topics-checklist",100,"spiking
"Environmental footprint of AI's hidden infrastructure and operations","environmental-footprint-of-ai-s-hidden-infrastructure-and-operations
"Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation's role in Europe's climate","atlantic-meridional-overturning-circulation-s-role-in-europe-s-climate",95
"Methane emissions reduction for climate and energy security","methane-emissions-reduction-for-climate-and-energy-security
"Open Coalition on Compliance Carbon Markets launched by EU Brazil China","open-coalition-on-compliance-carbon-markets-launched-by-eu-brazil-china",92
"Large errors in Climate TRACE global greenhouse gas database","large-errors-in-climate-trace-global-greenhouse-gas-database",86]
