Flat-faced obese dogs have a higher risk of developing the disease, and tend to have more severe symptoms. But despite the high prevalence of this disorder in many popular dog breeds, the underlying genetic basis of BOAS has been poorly understood.

In the new study, researchers estimated the heritability of BOAS in the Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug. They looked at respiratory health – determined by a standardized exercise test – and breeding records from the Royal Kennel Club from more than 4,000 dogs. Their analyses showed that two characteristics related to respiratory health were moderately heritable: 21-49% of variability in dogs’ respiratory function and 31-39% of variability in nostril size were attributable to genetics. Furthermore, poor respiratory function, nar
"https://phys.org/news/2026-05-flat-dogs-easier.html","phys.org","Breeding programs could alter heritable dog characteristics to reduce the rates of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), a breathing disorder...",null
"Study reveals how to protect dogs from deadly breathing condition","https://www.caledonianrecord.com/news/national/study-reveals-how-to-protect-dogs-from-deadly-breathing-condition/article_3f732d7c-5cd1-5925-ac94-a32daefb3dec.html?mode=nowapp","caledonianrecord.com","By Stephen Beech.
