NPR journalist Manoush Zomorodi, author of the new book _Body Electric_: The Hidden Health Costs of the Digital Age and New Science to Reclaim Your Well-Being, describes the physical effects of prolonged sitting as comparable to kinking a garden hose. The pressure that builds up at the torso and knees from hours of sitting actively prevents muscles from being properly stimulated, regardless of how much a person exercises at other times of day.\n\nZomorodi identifies 3 specific mechanisms through which sitting causes physical harm. First, the leg muscles require regular stimulation to pull glucose and lipids from the bloodstream and push oxygen to the brain, something a standing desk does not address.\n\nSecond, sitting compresses the diaphragm, limiting the ability to take full, deep breaths. Third, prolonged screen time disconnects people from interoception, the body’s internal signaling system that communicates hunger, fatigue and the need to move.
